Each October, Bayer MaterialScience hosts an annual Halloween party for Variety’s kids. This year’s party had a “Pirate’s of the Caribbean” theme, complete with Jack Sparrow himself. Decorations included clouds and pirate ships over all the windows, treasure map signage, sharks coming out of the floor where bad pirates could “walk the plank” and a Black Pearl ship for the kids to walk through.
There was no shortage of fun for the kids, as they visited the face painting table, had a caricature drawn by ToonBrian, and made “Pirate” themed crafts with the help of Bayer volunteers. A pumpkin gallery set up at the entrance had guests posing for photos and voting for their favorite pumpkin decorated and carved by the Bayer employees.
Volunteers dressed as pirates served a lunch of Dead Man Fingers (chicken tenders and barbeque sauce), land dogs (hot dogs with condiments), sparrow patties (mini cheese burger sliders), pizza planks (cheese and pepperoni pizza cut into planks), captain crunch cookies (various baked cookies), high seas and sandy beaches jell-o and a fruit punch cauldron with dry ice. Following lunch, Variety’s kids enjoyed an interactive performance by Gemini Theatre called “Pirates on the Mon.”
In keeping with tradition, the day ended with our annual Halloween costume parade where they received candy and other treats generously donated by Bender Consulting Services, Oxford Athletic Club, and Bayer Wellness Works. At the parade’s end in the parking lot, the kids took turns riding in miniature fire trucks provided by the local Moon Run and Forest Grove fire stations.
